Collection: Beyond Color

Seen from high above Tokyo, Perspective transforms the scale and density of the city into a study of lines, shapes and contrast. Towers rise from an almost endless urban landscape, while roads curve between buildings far below and the city stretches toward the horizon.

Stripped of color, the photograph draws attention to the structure of the scene: the repetition of windows, the geoetry of the architecture, and the relationship between the towering buildings at its centre and everything surrounding them. Perspective is about how dramtically a place can change depending on where we stand. From the streets below, these building dominate the skyline. From above, they become one part of something more larger.

A Note from the Artist

What fascinated me about this view was how unfamiliar the city became from above. At street level, Tokyo can feel enormous - buildings rise over you, streets disappear around corners, and the city seems to extend endlessly in every direction. Looking down on it changed that relationship completely.

Removing the color pushed that feeling even further. I stopped noticing individual signs, buildings or distractions and started seeing the city through its shapes, textures and scale. The towers that would normally make me look up where suddenly below me, surrounded by an urban landscape stretching far beyond them.

That is what Perspective means to me. Sometimes nothing about a place has to change for us to see it differently. We simply have to change where we're looking from.
