Inside Toronto's Union Station, movement is almost constant. Trains arrive and leave, commuters pass through, and thousands of individual journeys briefly intersect beneath the same roof.

Waiting for Departure captures the quieter side of that movement.

The station's clock glows against the shadows while towering window behind it catches the remaining light, dwarfing the details below. Rather than focusing on the rush of the station, the photograph isolates a moment of stillness within it - the pause between arriving and leaving, when there is nowhere to be except exactly where you are.

A Note from the Artist

What drew me to this scene was the light.

Union Station is a place I've passed through many times, but on this occasion, the warm glow of the clock against the enormous window made the space feel completely different. For a moment, the station stopped feeling like somewhere you simply pass through.

Photography has taught me that familiar places can still surprise us when we slow down enough to actually look at them. That's what Waiting for Departure means to me. It's about the spaces between destinations - the waiting, the observing, the moments that don't seem particularly important while we're living them, but somehow become part of the journey too.
